The great thing about synthetic wigs and hair extensions is that they require very little attention, and caring for them is absolutely stress-free. After all, they are here to make you shine, not to whine! However, there are a few things to look out for if you want your synthetic hair wigs to last for a long time. Let’s dive right into it - literally!

How to wash a synthetic wig?

If you wear your wig or extension daily, you should wash it once a week. However, if you only wear it once in a while and store it appropriately, wash it only when necessary. Just check if the synthetic hair is getting oily, starts to smell or doesn’t move as freely as it should. In that case, it is time for a gentle wash!

To clean your wig or extension, first entangle it with your fingers or a wig brush, not a comb! Start from the bottom and move your way up. Prepare a large bowl, sink or tub and fill it with cool or tepid water and shampoo. Only use wig shampoo and never normal one.

Swirl the wig or extension in the water, but avoid rubbing it against the tub’s wall or scrubbing it. Long wigs should be put into a loose ponytail to avoid tangling. Let it soak for at least 30 minutes and then rinse it with lukewarm water. After washing, you can apply wig conditioner which will allow you to style the hair easier later. Next, let the wig either air dry or blow dry it on the low temperature setting. For that, place it on a wig head or wig hanger. Please never use a higher temperature than 180 degree Celsius.

Step 1
Before washing your wig, gently
remove any tangles with a wide
tooth comb.
Step 2
Place your hand inside the cap and
hold the wig at the top. Run lukewarm
to cool water over the whole wig.
Step 3
Gently lather the hair with a small
amount of synthetic shampoo while
making sure the hair is traveling in the
same direction. Do not rub hair as this
may cause tangling.
Step 4
Rinse thoroughly in lukewarm to cool
water until water runs clear. Apply
conditioner according to individual
product instructions.

Step 5
Wrap the wig in a towel and gently pat
excess water off. Place it on a wig
stand and allow the wig to dry
naturally.
Step 6
Once the wig is dry, for mid to long
length styles, apply a detangling
spray. Focus on the bottom half of the
wig. We recommend using your
fingertips or wig comb to play up the
style.

How to store a synthetic wig?

Storing a synthetic hair wig appropriately is the number one rule to maintain it for a long time. For that, you should ideally place the hair piece on a wig head. Alternatively, you can store it in a satin bag or the box it was delivered in. Make sure that the storage location is dry and relatively cool. This also applies to hair extensions.

After you take the synthetic wig off your head and before packing it away, you need to entangle the hair. For that, use a dedicated wig brush or simply your fingers.

If the hair has become to matted or knotted beware of over brushing, instead use a sheen spray such as argan oil, lightly spray the wig and gently brush.

How long do wigs last?

If you wear your synthetic wig or extension daily, they will last four to six months. However, if you only wear it once in a while for special occasions and store it appropriately, you can enjoy the look for a very long time.

Do's and Don’ts of synthetic wig care
